Why don't they put a casino here and get these people out of poverty? It sure has worked in the State of Washington. Now they have money for first rate health clinics, schools, education.
Take a look at a map of South Dakota and note where the reservations are. This is not NY state or Washington state. These reservations are 100's of miles of NOTHING but rangeland. And they are an hour or more from any sizeable town. Casinos are not the answer here. Gambling on the rez would just be one more nail in the Native coffin anyway. The Lakota mentality is not the same as that of other tribes. You have to meet them where they are, or they will never meet you anywhere.
There is a Casino on the Pine Ridge res. The name is Prairie Winds Casino. It is located on hwy 18 near the west side of the Rez, in case you want to check it out.
uh
Casinos are not the answer. Stable businesses that will provide employment and good wages to people who live on the rez will. There used to be businesses there that employed a lot of people - one was a fishing fly company I believe - but they have closed and left, leaving people with no place to work.
They have been trying that since at least the 1980's.
I can't remember what other SD reservation/casino started growing marijuana recently but shut everything down right before they were going to start selling it.
