My name is Kwame and I am thinking about moving my family to your fine state.I live in Philly and love the history... but it's a war zone. A lot of hate and a lot of thugs -- for real. It's really sad.We might have more arts/culture,mass transit, sports, and diversity than SD... but it comes with a big price. You guys are not missing out. Be proud to represent your state.
I spent some time in the Black Hills (including a few days during winter) and I fell in love. The people I met there were great and I think it's a great place to raise a family. Deadwood was a blast and Spearfish was breathtaking. I have a pension already so the job situation is irrelevant. It's a matter of selling my home...that's it. I can easily rent my place out, but I'd rather sell it first.
If you don't mind, I might be asking a few questions from time to time.
Welcome Kwame! I'm glad that you got a good impression of the Black Hills! I have a friend from South Philly and he's told me horror-stories about living there. It sounds very rough. Is there a certain city you are interested in?
I'm thinking Rapid City, probably on the west-side of town...closer to the Hills I guess.I hear the west-side is the nicest, is this true? Any other good neighborhoods? I'm looking to rent a home at first.Do you think $1200/month will get me a nice, newer house in these good neighborhoods?
Welcome. There is a decent arts community around here. In Spearfish there is the Matthews Opera house. Falls of 03 they did and excellent job with MASH. There is also the Black Hills Playhouse. Quaint theater in the north end of Custer State Park near Keystone.
Rapid City has the Dahl Fine Arts Center which has just expanded. Also in Rapid is the Black Hills Symphony.
In the eastern part of the State in Sioux Falls there is the Washington Pavillion. a center for arts. Also the Prairie Rep Theater. Also in Sioux Falls is the South Dakota Symphony. SDSU (SD state University - Brookings) has an excellent Theater program and a fairly new theater.
Yes, the Westside is the nicest part of Rapid City. Especially areas like Carriage Hills, Red Rock, Countryside, and most homes along Sheridan Lake Road. There are tons of golf courses out that way and Arrowhead Country Club too. The next best side is the Southside past the hospital. Areas like Terracita Hills, Enchanted Hills, and Edinborough are pretty comparable to the Westside. I live on the southside and I love it because it's really nice yet the commute downtown doesn't take as long as it would on the Westside.
$1200 per month will get you a VERY nice place in Rapid City. Here are some examples I pulled from craigslist. If you search craigslist, make sure you look at the ENTIRE state because if you narrow it down to just Rapid City or the Black Hills it is too specific.
Southside:
Beautiful 4BR 3BH in Rapid City - GREAT FEATURES!!!!! (http://sd.craigslist.org/apa/937306800.html - broken link)
Westside:
+Office Home on the West Side MUST SEE (http://sd.craigslist.org/apa/920101485.html - broken link)
Thank you everyone! Danny, those listings look nice. By the way, is there generally a good supply of 3 bedroom homes available in the area?
I'd say so. There are a lot of new developments around Rapid City and most of the homes are 3 bed, 2 baths, 2 car. Some developments you may be interested in are Red Rock Meadows, Sheridan Lake Heights, South Pointe, and Eastridge Estates. Those are all on the Westside and Southside. Rapid Valley also has a lot of new developments and I bet the rent is cheaper out there too. Rapid Valley is an unincorporated town of about 10,000 just east of Rapid City. You wouldn't be in the foothills anymore but Rapid Valley has great mountain views.
Kwame, Rapid City is an excellent place to live... Sioux Falls is another place to consider in SD.
The Black Hills are such a beautiful area!
