It's Memorial day weekend again. Among other things Memorial day marks the end of the frost season for many gardeners. I remember my parents would not put the tomatoe plants out until they where sure they wouldn't freeze at night. They always waited until Memorial Day had passed. We used to have a garden that provided enough potatoes, carrots, peas, cucumbers, sweet corn, strawberrys, peppers, & tomatoes to feed 6 of us for a year. I also remember my Mother remarking that it was cheaper to buy canned goods in a store than it was to put up your own.
My Grandson and I just finished planting a ceremonial cherry tomatoe plant in a pot. I told him we would soon have jelly bean tomatoes [just feed the plant some sugar water] and he was quite delighted to help.
What does everyone do now? Is growing your own vegetables considered "old fashioned" or do many of you still grow your own? If so, what do you grow?
AWWW, the memories. My Mom always had a huge garden, too and there was a lot of canning to do. I remember they would buy crates of cherries to can, too. Some years our plum trees didn't produce a lot so they'd buy a crate of plums, too.
When we first got married, we also had a huge garden and my Mom and I would still do all the canning together. She's been gone for quite a while now and we moved and I'm just really not interested in gardening anymore. DH missed gardening a bit, but now he doesn't want the extra work either. We often get fresh veggies and fruits from the people who sit on the corner in their pickups and sell things they've grown.
Flowers~we still plant quite a few flowers cause we both love them so much. It just makes life so much brighter.
Hey all! Since I am getting out there mid-June, and probably not very settled until the first week of July, is there any hope for me this year? Will the greenhouses still have patio plants (tomatoes, peppers and/or flowers)? Or am I just going to have to wait until next year? Any chance of a quick set of cold-weather crops - lettuce, spinach, etc.?
Yea, July would be kinda late. BUT I noticed something in an ad on tv the other night. They now have hanging tomato plants. They grow upside down and you can take them inside and have tomatoes year-round. Not sure if they have anything else besides tomatoes OR if it even works. I'm sure the more up to date gardeners would have info on that.
we planted pumkins here but we will wont see this year because of the move.
