Finally, it's about time we start looking beyond this mudball for our resources....

"A new company intends by 2015 to send a fleet of tiny satellites to mine passing asteroids for high-value metals. Deep Space Industries Inc.'s asteroid mining proposal begins in 2015, when the company plans to send out a squadron of 55lb cubesats, called Fireflies, that will explore near-Earth space for two to six months looking for target asteroids.

I hope the investors have very large pockets. Cause it may never make any money or fall apart before it even starts.

Lets say they do and bring back any one of the precious metals we have on Earth that is run by legal cartels. You think they're going to sit by and let this happen? I surely wouldn't want to be working for the company.

My theory on this? Bully for them.

I'm so tired of waiting on the Federal government to get serious about space. Anybody who has ever deal with the Feds knows that it takes about ten times as long and cost twenty times as much to do anything. Hopefully, this is just the first step in the privatization of space.

I have to agree with you. Privatization of space travel may be the best thing. Space exploration whould be treated as any other resource.
The theories behind this venture are not too far-fetched. Finding a gold asteroid would be plausible, mining that gold and returning it safely to earth, well, that is going to be a little more difficult.

Good luck getting enough gold that will pay for the logestics and man hours to make it worth it. And if you were able to bring back tons of gold it would make it worthless once it flooded the market.

If they do manage to bring back tons of gold, or any other material, I certainly hope they do not bring it back all at one time. That could hurt.
