Do you have him on the waitlists? Does he have a support services caseworker who can help you monitor them?

You need to get a social worker on his case, if you don't already. There are lots of services, both government supported, and non-profit. Talk to other parents in your area with similarly afflicted children and find out what they know. You are not alone, there are plenty of us out there. Reach out and people will reach back.

There has to be some kind of vocational school somewhere?! If not I find that sad also. Try looking at the Autusm Speaks website. They have great resources.

I've tried it all...
He has, for now, a facility that has planned activities to do 6 hours a day,
2 days a week....

That's all out of pocket and wipes out his SSI check every month...

I guess that's better then nothing...but ...

I'm SO dissappointed on how the government is handling this crisis

He deserves more

I do not know your son's location on the spectrum and that can make a huge difference in the availability of services. As parents of special needs children, we have to plan ahead. If your child needs constant/supervision care, you need to go to your local department of social services and find out what resources are available. If your son is functioning, then look for services to help him become employable. Did you ever meet with his school counselor to talk about his future options? What did his IEP do to plan for his future?

There is clear info out there that services of all kinds, even quality education and medical services, vary widely among the states. Sounds like SC is one of those lower on the scale of provided services. I have found that to be the case in many of the southern tier of states.

Any possiblity of you moving?

The sad reality is that those who have no resources are first in line for anything...the thought process of workers is "this kid has family that will take care of him". So, funded day treatment program slots will go to kids who aged out and are in Foster homes, and have no parents. I knew a family who actually "kicked" their DD son "out"...then he was eligible for a group home placement, and placed in a funded sheltered workshop program. Not available when he lived at home with his parents taking care of him. Sad. The system is a mess. And yes....for kids with disabilities it is ALL about location....from the time they are in school on....
