My son who is 7, has ADHD. He was diagnosed at age 6 from a child psychiatrist. He currently take the generic for Focalin 15 mg and it works great for him so far. However, I have a question. The worst side effect was his decreased appetite. I am therefor giving him a large breakfast and sense I can't control what he eats or not eat in school, I give him a larger dinner and snacks when he comes home in the afternoon.
He is a very good student but sometimes he slips up and have a "bad" or "not so good" day. A typical breakfast in the morning could be instant oat meal - apple cinnamon flavor , a banana and toast. With a breakfasts like this he normally have good days in school. Some days he lands on yellow which is below green or even red, and it is always for being distracted and unfocused.

Not too long ago I read somewhere that kids with ADHD should stay away from sugar. Obviously this makes allot of sense and I am kicking myself for not putting one and one together. Ever sense I read this I started to give him high protein breakfasts for example, omelets in the morning with green pepper, Canadian bacon, cheese and water or milk to drink. I am not sure if it is my imagination or not but it seems like ever sense I switched to a high protein breakfast he seems to have had no yellow or red days at all. It's only been a couple of weeks but maybe that's enough to make a difference?

This morning he woke up before us and decided to help himself to a couple of Fiber One bars, the oat and chocolate kind. I know they are loaded with sugar and I was worried when I dropped him off at school that he would be effected by this "sugar boost". Sure enough, today was a yellow day.

So I guess Im asking those of you who have kids with adhd, with or without meds, how much does high sugar foods effect your child? I can't believe it took me so long to see this and it makes me feel really bad.

Thanks for reading.

Sugar can most definitely be negatively impacting your kiddo. Have you had him tested to see if he has Candida (yeast) overgrowth? This can often be an issue, too.

Sounds like you're on the right path! :-)

I have not tested him. Didn't know it was such thing as you describe. But thank you, I still look into it :-)

Sugar is not so much an issue with us, as long as it is pure sugar and not part of a processed food, but dyes and preservatives and anything processed we avoid. Here's a quick overview, dyes have been the biggest deal for our son.

I have just started this John Hopkins derived mitochondrial cocktail called mitospectra. I recommend this based off the scientific findings of this non invasive easily implemented product.

Check out this website and watch the video to decide for yourself.
