Turkeys in the trees / exchanging glances (Spokane, South Hill: neighborhoods, live in, title)

So....flocks of wild turkeys strutting around the South Hill are nothing new. But last night, my wife and I witnessed their perching habits firsthand. From our lawn, a dozen or so suddenly fluttered up onto our roof, then flapped over to our neighbors’ roofs, and finally up into the branches of a couple of the huge ponderosa pines which shade our neighborhood.

And these were no easy hops — the lowest branches are at least twenty feet off the ground. And the gobblers continued up, higher and higher, until they were just dark blobs in the highest reaches of the trees — a good eighty or ninety feet up! As the sun set, they blended into the dark limbs and finally disappeared into the darknesss.

This morning these was no sign of them — except for a few feathers and the poop they had left on our lawn. I have a feeling they’ll be back, though. Sometimes we forget that turkeys are indeed birds, with the power of short, rudimentary flight. I witnessed it, I was impressed with them.

And I thought about Thanksgiving.

Ha ha! Love it. I repped you just for the title of this thread. I miss seeing turkeys like we had roaming the neighborhoods back in Illinois. Don't see any of them in AZ where I am now. Looking forward to seeing some fine feathered friends again once we get up to Spokane.

Just a little added attraction. I live in western Montana. I watched a Canadian Goose fly out of the tall grass, I lost
the goose in his first 10 seconds of flight. I began looking all around the grass. I finally located this goose. He was 75'
up in a cottonwood tree, standing on a 4-6" limb. I grew up in western Washington where millions of Geese pass through
every year and had never heard or seen of this. I have been told they build their nest in tree's along the Bitterroot river.
