The wife and I are looking at moving to an Apartment in the begining of October. We are most likely going to be driving a moving truck and towing our car behind it. What would be the safest and/or fastest route from Southern California to Spokane? Also, is the weather decent in the begining of Oct?

Michael

I would go CA-91 W, to I-5 N, to I-84 E (in Portland), to US-395 N, to I-90 E.

All interstates with the exception of US-395, which is a near interstate quality highway.

I have driven both routes many a time. From Riverside, I-15 up through Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana, and west into Spokane does not include any major Rocky Mountain driving, with the possible exception of Lookout Pass at MT/ID border. And yes, you cross the divide further south on the ID/MT border, but it isn't really mountainous at all. However, there are shorter routes on the "2-laners". Timewise, factor in the non-interstate delays.

I've driven both in a moving van towing a car, and I would take David's route...would even consider cutting up 97 through central Oregon and picking up 84 at Biggs. Good roads, little grade.

The quickest route is the 97 cutoff from the I-5 in weed, it cuts off about 1 1/2 to 2 hours from the other two mentioned. However it is a single lane highway that climbs a moderate grade around Mt. Shasta and drops down into Klamath falls. If it is snowing, your vehicle is very underpowered, or overheats easily I would skip it, otherwise it's not bad and highly scenic. You will see many 18-wheelers that take this route, so don't think it is a treacherous mountain road.

The I-5 route gives you more options if the weather turns unseasonably nasty in October. Skip the 97 cutoff at weed and continue to Portland and then go through the Gorge.

There are also more services along the I-5 corridor then the I-15. Also I know the mileages are about the same, but the I-15 route has always taken me about 1 hour longer then the I-5 through Portland way, I think it has to do with traffic through SLC and LV.

One last thought - If you plan on staying at a hotel, you will be going right over the top of Shasta lake on the I-5 route, beautiful scenery - hotels/motels in Oct should be very cheap and you might want to spend some time there - sightseeing.

Just moved to Spokane from Irvine yesterday. We stayed a night in Mount Shasta. Very cool area, you can drink water that comes right out of the mountain at City park. Everyone goes there with their empty containers to fill up, pretty cool.

TSO2 - That's so cool, looks like there are quite a few So Cal transplants there. What hotels did u stay at during your trip, were they big enough to park a moving truck plus a car carrier? How do you like it so far? Did you move into a house or an apartment? Any info or pics or advice would be awesome!

Just got an email yesterday that there was a response in this thread...weird. I stayed at the Best Western tree house inn(or something like that), in Shasta. You'd probably be good there with a moving truck because it's very empty during this time of year.
We stayed in Seattle at the BW near the space needle...well kind of, we left an hour after we got there because it was a dump. Tiny parking lot. We moved to the Marriott in Bellevue which was awesome. It had a parking structure there so I don't know if it would work for a moving truck. I'll post some pics in a bit.

We moved into a house in Five Mile Prairie...beautiful neighborhood. 5 bed 3 bath for $1425 a month!!!
The house would be $3500 a month in socal.
