I don't think there is a thread about this yet.

To see the current medal table: 2012 Summer Olympics medal table - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What are your thoughts on this? Which countries are underperforming or doing better than you expected? How is your country doing so far?

I'm a bit surprised to see Australia and Russia ranked so low, they're usually one of the top performers. Both have a lot of silver medals though so perhaps they were just a bit unlucky.

I'm also surprised to see countries like North Korea and Kazachstan in the top 10 but I don't think they'll be able to keep this up until the end.

China's doing really well. The US probably pulls away at the end, especially since they still have the women's soccer team, both basketball teams, Kerri Walsh & Misty-May Treanor, and track & field athletes still awaiting medals (mostly gold though), while after the badminton & table tennis finals, there's not many more events the Chinese are favored to medal in.
Thought it'd be Russia that would be on our tails and not China.

Can someone give me the brief version of why India has so few medals? I get the cultures are different, but 2 total medals? Some other forces are at work here that I am missing,,,

I think it is their sports culture - or lack thereof. In 2008 India got 3 medals (1 gold, 2 bronze) and in 2004 India only won 1 silver medal.

I'm also surprised that the Latin-American countries never perform that well at the Olympics. Brazil has a population of ~ 190 million but they have only won 1 gold medal so far. Mexico hasn't won any gold yet. Cuba is the only Latin-American country in the top 20.

I wonder who will finish #1 this time: China or the US?

I thought fourth place in 2008 was really impressive but Team GB are in third atm with ten golds already! Some of the cycling/rowing performances have been amazing - back in the day we only used to win five or six golds over the whole Games and in 1996 we only won one! I haven't actually been to any of the events yet but all over the city there's a great atmosphere - I'm loving it!

Well, I'm USA first, but always root for the West Indian nations as well. Of course with track & field coming up, Jamaica should clean up again on the men's side.

swimming is australias strongest event and they have had a nightmare at theese games , winning only one gold and that was a in a relay

my country has won no medals ( we might win one in sailing and should win a few in boxing ) yet but not many people outside the country realise that we have two domestic sports which absolutley dominate and to the detriment of internationally competed sports
