Also refreshing to see that Serena Williams is still competing in the Doubles with her sister, currently in the Semi Final.
Very few Singles players compete in Doubles anymore, unlike the good old days of Navratalova, McEnroe etc.
It would improve their volleying and net play no end if they did.
Looks like Serena is beginning to show her age; plus I don't think she's ever had to deal with adversity on the tennis court before. Azarenka is playing like she isn't afraid of Serena.
Well, not surprisingly, Rafa showed the world who the REAL BOSS is on concrete.
A few thoughts on what turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable tournament, as expected:
Wawrinka - This guy is a street fighter who proved that he was the third best player in this major. Hopefully he can hold his good form and come out swinging again Down Under in January.
Murray - Hate to see such a physically gifted player lose his composure the way he did in the Wawrinka match. Granted, Waw had a hell of a tournament and likely would've beaten him regardless, but Murray has to do a better job trying to keep a positive frame of mind while battling thru adversity. Ivan has probably talked with him about this many times and, yeah, I know it's a lot easier said than done in the heat of battle.
Rafa - Despite the fluke loss at Wimbledon, he's clearly having a season for the ages. Player of the Year, in my book. Hopefully the legs hold up so he can make a run at The Great Swiss's magic number of 17 over the next few years...
Joker does not seem to maintain the focus and intensity of his 2011-early 2012 season, we only see it in short spurts, like the 2nd and part of the 3rd set at US Open.
Full credit to Nadal for reinventing his game on hard courts.
Joker has plenty of homework to do on trying to beat him again. You also can't do that many unforced errors against somebody of Nadal's calibre and consistency.
No doubt Nadal will go to Number 1 at the next event he enters, as he has no points to defend, and will have the deserved 2013 season ending Number 1 title.
The rest of the year, and road to London will be interesting.
The Top 8 here will participate.
