Sure there will be plenty of Tiger Talk no matter his performance but claiming that "nothing else will matter" is a bit of a reach. Maybe nothing else will matter to all the Tiger Fans and the "fans" who only watch because of Tiger but for the rest of us who love the game, watching all the events, and absolutely love watching the majors... it always matters and there's plenty to watch. There's pleeeenty of good story lines:
- Rory going for his 1st green jacket/Career Grand Slam/Third straight major victory.
- Can Bubba win Back-To-Back and his 3rd overall in the last 4 years?
- Does Lefty have the magic in him to win Green Jacket #5?
- Can Rickie Fowler finally win his first major after finishing in the top 5 in all 4 majors last year?
- Can Fred Couples once again CONTEND going into Sunday?
- Can Sergio/Westwood/Stricker etc. etc. get that 1st major win?
- Which unlikely player will contend going into Sunday?
You name it... there's plenty going on not involving Tiger.
Oh trust me, I wholeheartedly agree and understand that there is plenty going on this year not involving Tiger. My post was aimed more towards the media coverage and how they'll handle the non-Tiger story lines. Will the rest of us be provided satisfactory exposure these other stories deserve? Or will they be mentioned for a minute in passing while Tiger gets 10 minutes of reporting the same old few topics they talk about?
Tiger Woods gets the penultimate Thursday tee time with Ryder Cup star Jamie Donaldson and two-time 2015 PGA Tour winner this season Jimmy Walker. They play at 1:48 p.m. in Round 1..............meaning lots of TV time to demonstrate whether he's cured his chipping/pitching yips.
Tiger is getting the majority of press this week: answers OP's question, doesn't it?
This ^. Not to mention a 12 page thread on how we don't give a damn about someone is... well, ironic.
I'm actually a bigger fan of his than I ever was. I call it the anti-hero syndrome. Sort of like how I rooted for Duke the other night (which is borderline blasphemy for a Terp alum, but the Duke-hating got to me).
Similarly - I hated this guy when he was on top. Okay, maybe "hated" is not the right word. I was sick of hearing everyone talk about him. All my non-golfing relatives and friends wanted to discuss golf with me back in the day like they were golf analysts. They were experts in telling me about his game and how I don't know as much because I liked Retief, Ernie, DLIII or Justin Leonard. I often found myself debating golf with these folks, and these are people who's closest association to golf was putt-putt.
Of course, these same people were the ones that later sort of "mocked" me because I loved a sport that had a "disgraced athlete" as it's poster child (all in jest of course).
So yea, my "Eric Compton" pick for this week is Tiger. I hope he does well. I think it's a bit unrealistic to put any money on a win/place/show bet for Tiger, but I'll certainly be rooting for him... for once.
Tiger doing well on the par 3. Two under after 5 with not much chipping. Surely he is playing it close to the vest on chipping.
I was hoping he'd have a few chips - he really should have purposely missed a few greens just to have the experience of chipping in front of all those people, TV scrutiny.......good practice for tomorrow.
