We can recognize a real college football rivalry (Ohio State vs. Michigan for example) and a real college basketball rivalry (like UNC-Duke). But here I am going to be looking at a rivalry that is the best when you combine football and basketball.

The following rivalries include the two public universities in states which are relevant that are the "big boys" in the given state.

We're measuring this on the basis of:

• tradition : long standing rivalry over the years; this one has gained its traction.

• In state identification: these schools have the strongest picture of the state's divide. That is: our state divides into these two camps. I identify with _____, not _____

• exposure: due to many factors (size of market, profile of institutions, media coverage) the two schools are known across the nation and each is evocative enough that they create a real image in our minds

• conference: both being in a given conference may add to universities exposure. Or the fact that this is a matchup of two schools in different conferences give is a sense of being ____ Conference vs. ____ Conference

• quality: these two schools have had quality, high profile programs in both football and basketball. They are successful in both and can rightfully be seen as being both a "football and basketball school"

So in summary the list that follow include the two highest profile public universities in a given state (where applicable: this means Florida, Oregon, Kansas, and Indiana belong; Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska and Arkansas do not.

Cal’s biggest rival by far is Stanford. UCLA’s biggest rival by far is USC. Cal and UCLA were the only choice for public universities that are the top of a state’s public universities.

In terms of competitiveness I'd have to go with Michigan State/Michigan

You've missed an obvious one- Battle of the Bluegrass - UK vs U of L

Basketball takes the cake for the rivalry part of this, but football has always been very chippy & is always entertaining. Not to mention both teams in both sports, are always among the best (Aside from U of L football in 2018).
