I moved to this place a few years ago and one of the first things I learned about this city was just how many bad neighborhoods there are in this area. You have to be really careful from block to block in this city. It's much different than any other place I've been to in terms of crime. So I don't think it's astonishing to me that this place is rated as one of the most dangerous cities in the USA. I could believe it. If you're out in the burbs, then of course it will be safe.

If you think St. Louis has some bad neighborhoods, you will really be overwhelmed when you get to Chicago.

Can I ask where else you've been?

This is exactly the erroneous commonly accepted crap I can't stand. Ever been to Wellston or Jennings in St. Louis county? Those are suburbs.

How about Aurora or Harvey in Chicago's suburbs?

Just as many city neighborhoods are perfectly safe, many suburbs are quite crime ridden.

^Bingo! I'd much rather walk down the street at night in some city neighborhoods than I would during the day in some suburbs.
Crime doesn't observe the city/suburban dividing line. It goes wherever the opportunity presents itself.

That's North County though.

All I can tell you is you better be careful if you're out walking the streets in west county.

I've heard the Van Buren Boys are back:

Haha!^ I love a good Seinfeld reference. Seriously though, crime in the county is not just limited to North Co. South county is home to many of the region's sketchiest & cheapest apartment buildings. I had my car broken into when I lived near one and plenty of other people I know have as well. This was in Oakville of all places.

Of course overall the county has a much lower crime rate than the city, but blanket statements like "things are safe in the suburbs" is pretty off base if you ask me.

Blanket statements can usually get people in trouble. I consider Kirkwood to be extremely safe, but we've had some well documented and publicized incidents in recent years and many lesser known incidents that aren't heavily publicized. I've even bought pizzas from that Michael Devlin freak back in the day.

County being the operative word in that sentence.
