for me it came during the 1980 Olympics when Subaru was the official vehicle of the US Ski Team. The commercial had the wagon driving up the snow covered mountain past some other vehicles that were stuck.

Subaru is consistently one of the most reliable brands on the market, now that they've got that head gasket issue fixed. They'll run forever if you just keep up with the basic maintenance. That's one of their biggest selling points - yeah, you'll pay a little more to the dealer on the front end, but you won't spend much on mechanics after that point.

Yes, the biggest thing plaguing them were head gasket issues. We had them replaced in our 2000 Legacy, thankfully under warranty. Other then that no issues on all our Subarus we have owned. Spark plugs are a bit harder due to boxer engine so you have remove some parts to get access to them since they are on the sides and not in top.

I think that Subaru is reasonably happy with the number of Legacies they sell. The mid-sized sedan segment is hella competitive and the margins on those vehicles isn't that great compared to other segments- when Chrysler decided to recently discontinue the 200, they said the car was profitable but that they'd make a lot more money shifting production to higher margin Jeeps. And Subaru's capacity issues, even with the upcoming Indiana expansion, mean that for every Legacy they make, that's one Outback or Crosstrek they don't make instead, and I suspect those are significantly higher profit vehicles for Fuji than the mid-sized sedans are.

Adjusted for inflation, new Subaru vehicles are lower in price now compared to 10-15 years ago. My 2004 Forester optioned out at around $28K new, I bought it used for around $8k. One can purchase a 2016 for less than $28K new.
