So I got locked out of my 2017 Subaru Forester today--with the engine running. What kind of sorcery is this? Is this a safety feature? This has never happened with my other vehicles.

Interesting - my 2015 Outback won't allow the locks to work with the key in the car unless I somehow hit the inside lock button while the door was closed. Which would require an open window, making the locking kind of useless.
Never get out of the newer cars and leave your keys in the ignition unless you leave a window open. I got locked out of a non-subaru about 8 years ago with the key in the ignition.
When I get gas, I either roll down the window, or take the keys. The door can lock on you with the key in the ignition.
Were you using the valet key? That's the only way we can lock my husband's Forester (he's had a 2017 and now has a 2018) while it's running.
Nope! The valet key was inside as well! But not anymore...I got one of those magnetic stash boxes to put the valet key in and attach to the bottom of the vehicle.

I have two vehicles with keyed ignitions and they won't let you lock the driver's door with the key in the ignition. One is a 2015 and the other is a 2016. This feature has been around for decades.

I understand that. My car had that. But it malfunctioned, and did the opposite: it locked the car as soon as I closed the door.

A decked out Ford Focus, BTW.
Later model Fords are easy to lock yourself out of. Most German cars, you can't "lock and slam" the driver's door, you have to lock it after closing it, using the key, from outside the car.
