Graduate Student Apartment Complexes Near Syracuse (Rochester, Brighton: rent, neighborhood, living)

My partner and I will be relocating to Syracuse, NY in August - she'll be doing a PhD at SU and I'll be commuting to Rochester for my program.

We've settled on Syracuse as our living place. We both have our own cars and will use them most of the year. However, as she uses a motorized scooter to move around, driving during the winter is going to be difficult (maybe) so we want to look around for apartment complexes that are on a bus route. So, should she be unable to drive during the winter she can use public transportation.

Nob Hill Apartments south of campus came recommended, so we'll check them out when we're in town (later in June). Hoping you fine people may be able to suggest some other locations for us as well.

We have two cats, they're our only children. We presently pay about $800 (together) in rent so with both of our stipends that same amount shouldn't be a problem. We are flexible on it though.

We're okay with a 1-bedroom but if the price is workable, we'd consider a 2-BR.

Some walkable amenities would be nice - parks, good beer and restaurants, etc would be nice but not a necessity as we'll have our cars.

You are coming from Nashville right? Nob Hill could work, as there is a bus route that goes to and from campus, just in case. You wouldn't be in a walkable area, but you would be a short drive from shopping, bars, restaurants and parks.

You may be able to find something in the Westcott neighborhood, which has restaurants, cafés, bars and parks you could walk to.

There is a small possibility that you could find something Downtown, if you can go up a little bit in terms of rent. She could possibly take the Connective Corridor Bus to and from campus.

I would also contact Off Campus and Commuter Services at SU as well.

I think the apartments on Remington Lane (off of Thurber), Clarendon Heights and Newburry Hollow lane would be a good choice. The only one I can think of the name is Clarendon Heights ... because the sign is right there on Brighton.

They (and Nob Hill) are a quick shot to 81 so you can get on the thruway to get to Syracuse. I don't know about Westcott area, and Nob Hill, but the apartments I mentioned above will be on the "emergency snow" route. While the city absolutely refuses to plow these roads for 2-3 days (definitely get snow tires for your car), the buses will always be going.

Nob Hill is popular but I don't know if it is on the emergency bus route. It's also a crap shoot as to whether or not you will get a nice apartment or a small, dingey, smelly, run down apartment - they charge the same for all. I looked at them 3 years ago and, for what they were going to charge me, just was not worth it. If you have extra junk they do have garages available.

Nob hill and Clarendon Heights do allow cats - have friends with cats that live in both. Since I can't think of the name of the others, I can't say whether or not they do or look them up online.
