As a former SU grad, I am going to do it.

Yes.

Not following the typical route to Florida or other warm climates.

What do you all think? My friends think I am crazy because I have the resources to move anywhere in the world. But, I just like Salt City.

Have you decided on what you are looking for in a community yet?

Thinking I want somewhere close to the Dome or close to Green Lakes State Park.

But, I really like Dewittshire too.

So, you are basically looking at the East Side into the Eastern suburbs then. Do you have a budget in terms of a home or rental?

I will say that if you like DeWittshire, which is in the town of DeWitt, you may also like an area like the Arlington section of Eastwood in the city: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0646...7i13312!8i6656

It is the area of that neighborhood south of James Street/east of Midler Avenue/north of Burnet Avenue/west of the city/DeWitt line. It offers quick access to I-690, the Thruway and shopping on Erie Boulevard East on the East Side of the city into DeWitt. You are also close to the James Street Wegmans and this park is in that area: http://www.syrgov.net/Parks/EastwoodHgt.html , https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0634...7i16384!8i8192

It is kind of a hidden area of the city that is quite solid/nice and convenient.

I have resources. I think renting is better because I would have the flexibility to move.
I just need a small place too.
1000 sq feet or so.

the main question I had though was the idea of "retiring in Syracuse".

how common is this?

or is it just a given that people are going to retire in warm places.

Some people do it. So, it isn't as uncommon as it may seem. When I say this, I know people that could leave if they want to, but decide to stay.

If you want to rent, DeWittshire has an older building, but it is very low key in terms of advertising of the building. I would say that if you want to be in that area, look into complexes such as these: https://www.dlhproperties.net/proper...partment-homes
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0276...7i16384!8i8192 (DeWitt)

https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0416...7i16384!8i8192 (East Side)

Another complex not too far from the University, but is also closer to Jamesville Beach County Park and Clark Reservation: https://www.apartmentfinder.com/New-...nor-Apartments

Some information on those parks: https://onondagacountyparks.com/park...le-beach-park/

https://parks.ny.gov/parks/clarkrese...n/details.aspx

Just to illustrate proximity to those places: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Gree...d43.036233!3e0

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Gree...d42.965494!3e0

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Gree...d42.997172!3e0

If you like to golf, Drumlins isn't too far away either: https://drumlins.com/index.html
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Gree...d43.019947!3e0

You are also a short drive to hospitals as well: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Gree...43.0414634!3e0
https://www.crouse.org/

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Gree...43.0419677!3e0
https://www.upstate.edu/hospital/

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Gree...43.0078725!3e0
https://www.upstate.edu/community/

So, a place like this could be a nice option within close proximity to many services/attractions/things to do.

I was also just thinking that there are senior apartments that you may qualify for and that could be something to consider as well.
