This is another listing for a townhome in that general area of Liverpool(actually the town of Clay) and it is a little above price, but may offer a size that you may feel comfortable with: https://www.apartmentfinder.com/New-...tments-ecre8nq

A street view: https://www.google.com/maps/@0.00000...062720&g_st=ic

Commute to the hospital: https://maps.google.com/?geocode=Fc4...062720&g_st=ic

It is close to some shopping on Route 57, including the John Glenn Wegmans and the village is a short drive away with cafes, restaurants, a big county park, a library, another grocery store(with a good meat market), etc. You also wouldn’t be to far from Destiny USA, which has some indoor fun spots for kids(go-karts, bowling/lazer tag, bounce room, etc.). Liverpool Schools are generally solid/good and it is the 3rd biggest SD in the area behind Syracuse City and North Syracuse Central SD’s.

More Sedgwick information: https://www.sedgwickfarm.org/

A street view in the middle of the neighborhood: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0652...7i16384!8i8192

You could walk or take a short bike ride/drive/bus ride to some of the businesses along James Street or other parts of Eastwood or to Downtown going west on James Street.

There is Salem-Hyde Elementary in the neighborhood, which is a solid/good public school and it has a playground on the property: https://data.nysed.gov/profile.php?instid=800000040878 , https://www.syracusecityschools.com/salemhyde
Street view of the school: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0693...7i16384!8i8192

There is also Schiller Park nearby, which has a pool, nice view of the city skyline, you'll see Soccer runs due to the very diverse population in other parts of the North Side: https://www.syr.gov/Living/Our-Commu.../Schiller-Park

You also have East Side neighborhoods like Meadowbrook, which is near Westcott, a street view: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0318...7i13312!8i6656

and Outer Comstock near Syracuse University and not too far from the hospital: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0183...7i16384!8i8192

You could go straight down Comstock Avenue past the University to this business district north of campus: https://crousemarshall.com/
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0416...7i16384!8i8192

or go down Comstock and take a right down Euclid to Westcott Street.

May add more later...
Also, if you like Eastwood or Sedgwick, this Catholic school on James Street in Eastwood could be an option: https://www.blessedsacramentschool.org/
https://www.niche.com/k12/blessed-sa...l-syracuse-ny/

Some from that area of town that go with private schools for upper grades may go with Bishop Grimes in East Syracuse, which isn’t too far away: https://www.bishopgrimes.org/
https://www.niche.com/k12/bishop-gri...t-syracuse-ny/

Institute of Technology at Central is the best HS in the Syracuse City SD and is a magnet school that is located on the southern edge of Downtown: School Home | The Syracuse City School District | Syracuse, NY

Another place that come to mind is this complex in the East Syracuse-Minoa SD: https://www.apartmentfinder.com/New-...ark-Apartments It isn't too far from some cafes, a couple of bookstores(inc. one with vintage records), the Palace Theatre and some other retail in this city neighborhood: https://www.eastwoodneighbor.com/

There are some areas of the city that could work, but it may be a matter of fitting what you are looking for and perhaps flexibility in terms of schooling.

This townhouse listing is in the Kimbrook area of Clay/Baldwinsville Schools and is close to shopping on Route 57 and 31(2 Wegmans between the 2, as well as a range of big box stores, restaurants, etc.), as well as the villages of Baldwinsville and Liverpool, with a reasonable commute to the hospital.

https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...7_M91732-82961

Commute: https://maps.app.goo.gl/iSwzkNu6Hy7w2E416?g_st=ic

To the villages of Baldwinsville: https://maps.app.goo.gl/nBqhE8Tf6VcarPqW8?g_st=ic

and Liverpool: https://maps.app.goo.gl/mcP18BpMxydnvwsTA?g_st=ic

Wegmans on Route 31: https://maps.app.goo.gl/x7pJ982JY6C57tN97?g_st=ic

and the John Glenn Wegmans on Route 57: https://maps.app.goo.gl/J5dHxkefLdApKL478?g_st=ic

So, it is convenient to quite a bit in the area.

If I get a job at the University Hospital, I will be relocating from Chicago suburbs to Syracuse, NY. I will be bringing a spouse and two school-aged kids with me. We will be looking for a rental apartment/house within 15 min driving time from the hospital in a safe, family-friendly neigbourhood with decent schools. Our budget is $1,500. I might stretched it up for another couple hundreds in exchange for a safer/closer area or more square footage.
We enjoy going out to cafes, shops and restaurants, so places with high walkability index are preferred, but not required. If you asked me describe the vibe of desired area, I'd say the one that provides urban-suburban vibe. Not too crowded as a big city, but not too rural either.

My friend lives in the area and he recommended following suburbs: DeWitt, Manlius, Skaneateles, Baldvinsville, Liverpool.

What would be the best pick for us and our kids given the above conditions?

Thank you everyone for your input!
In terms of the bolded, you can do this in Syracuse districts such as Armory Square: https://www.visitsyracuse.com/things...armory-square/
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0486...7i16384!8i8192
Which has this museum that the kids may like: https://www.most.org/

Hanover Square: https://www.visitsyracuse.com/things...anover-square/
https://www.hanoversquaresyr.com/
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0504...7i16384!8i8192

Clinton Square is where you can ice skate in the winter, go to a Christmas Tree lighting and has plenty of festivals during the year: https://www.visitsyracuse.com/things...linton-square/
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0513...7i16384!8i8192
A list of festivals in the area, that includes those in Clinton Square: https://www.visitsyracuse.com/events...nts-festivals/

All are Downtown districts and you can find more Downtown Syracuse information here: https://www.downtownsyracuse.com

Hanover Square is more laid back in terms of nightlife than Armory Square.

You also can find some things like Freedom of Espresso cafe, a sandwich shop(Boulangerie), an indoor rock climbing gym, a small park that many use for wedding/prom pictures with a fountain, some companies/offices and a couple of restaurants here just NW of Downtown: https://www.syracuse.com/news/2013/0...wasteland.html
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0566...7i16384!8i8192

There's also this neighborhood east of Syracuse University that historically had a more eclectic vibe to it: https://www.visitsyracuse.com/things...owns/westcott/
https://westcottsyr.com/
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0402...7i16384!8i8192
This is an annual festival that takes place there: https://westcottstreetfair.org/
A community center that has a radio station and a weekly Farmers Market on Wednesday late afternoon/evenings during the warmer months: https://westcottcc.org/
I did mention the neighborhood earlier in the thread, but it also won this is 2008 along with the University Hill neighborhood, which includes University Hospital: https://www.planning.org/greatplaces...ersityhill.htm
https://university-hill.com/
This previously mentioned district north of Syracuse University is also included in that award: https://crousemarshall.com/

So, say you want to get a bit to eat during lunch time, you could walk to that latter area: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Univ...43.0417673!3e2

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Univ...d43.041475!3e2

There are also a few spots in this area some call Midtown or the northern edge of the University Hill area along East Genesee Street: https://university-hill.com/destinat...-neighborhood/
http://university-hill.com/wp-conten...chure-2018.pdf
Street view: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0469...7i16384!8i8192

There's also the previously mentioned Tipperary Hill, some spots on North Salina Street(some may still refer to it as Little Italy and while some Italians are still there, it is probably one of the most culturally diverse areas in the state outside of NYC), Eastwood and even Destiny USA(the 8th biggest shopping center in the country) also have some spots/things worth looking at going to within the city.

I'd personally say that in terms of villages outside of the city, Skaneateles is nice, more upscale and would definitely be a place to go to now and then.

Liverpool is kind of underrated, as it has some restaurants, cafes, a nice old school grocery store, a big county park which hosts this winter event: https://www.lightsonthelake.com/ , a nice library, some low key events and is in a good location.

I also like Fayetteville due to having walkability, but it is pretty much self contained to where you don't necessarily have to leave it. Meaning, it has enough range in terms of shopping due to the Towne Center at Fayetteville, a YMCA, some restaurants, a nice newer library, may have events during the summer at a park(live music for an example), it is in one of the "best" school districts in Upstate NY/NY State in general and it has some historical sites.

Baldwinsville is a bigger village of about 6800 or so people with the Seneca river running through the middle of it and you can see people fishing from the bridge. They have live music at Papermill Island, some restaurants, again a nice newer library, good schools, has a newer YMCA just outside of the village, multiple golf courses in the area(Radisson, Firefox, at Timber Lakes) and Beaver Lake Nature center just outside of the village, among other things.

So, there are multiple options in the area that you would have access to.
