Yep, it can suck for people on a fixed income. I left Texas when I retired because where I lived land values were extremely high, and my dinky 1600 sf house on a small 4600 sf lot was taxed at $11,000 per year, WITH exemptions, and rising up to 10% a year. Almost all of the tax was on the value of the land, not the 80-year-old house I was in (that needed work). Many seniors where I lived have had to sell their homes because they couldn't afford the taxes, quite a few had to move to apartments. Also happened to my sister in Florida.
Wait…You mean these states people keep saying are cheap, may actually have property taxes that rival, if not surpass those in Upstate NY? Say it ain’t so.

I read Rochester and Albany are the best places to invest in a multi-family home in NY for rental income. Is that true?

My taxes in Houston have been flat or down for a while, despite increasing value. Usually due to the Legislature tweaking school funding.

Property taxes are high in N.Y. and Texas, BUT there is no state income tax in TX.

Home prices are higher in much of TX in comparison to much of Upstate NY as well.
