I've never owned a tablet or even a laptop. I always figured that such devices were mostly for people who travel a lot. I have an Android phone and a Windows desktop PC.

I'm going to Florida to visit my 82-year-old father in January, and I'd like to be able to show him some photos and videos on a decent sized screen - probably at least 9" or 10". The sound quality of the videos isn't that important as he's almost deaf, anyway.

My budget is $400 or less. Any ideas? The choices seem overwhelming - Android? Apple? An Intel processor? Attachable keyboard? There's no doubt that this market has exploded in the past few years.

A list of maybe three or four top recommendations would be great. Thank you!

there are a lot of options, but i would recommend since you're familiar with Android, stick with Android

a Nexus 10 would be a good choice (a couple of yrs old but top notch and Tablets last longer than phones)

I'm using a 2013 Asus Memo pad 10" with FHD and I've been happy with it (bought new for $230 a few months ago)

once you settle on one, shop around prices can vary greatly

Agree on sticking with Android since you already have it.

Really anything by Nexus, Samsung, Asus, or other major brands.

Stay away from the really cheap stuff, and brands that you haven't heard of.

Good find Peregrine!! I'd be looking at that if I didn't already own one.

Econobox: used Insignia (Best Buy) 10.1" NS-14T004 16GB quad core Jelly Bean Android tablet on ebay, $44.99 OBO. They run nice and smooth. I bought one for my parents. It was like-new, long battery life. My Android 4.4.x KitKat tablets seen to be harder on batteries and have shorter runtime per charge than the ones that ran JellyBean.

Has Bluetooth. I picked up a $10 iHome Bluetooth keyboard at Ollie's discount store, and loaded Kingsoft WPS Office on mine. There are some things I still can't do on Android as easily or efficiently as on a Windows laptop. Print is one, because my printers are networked but not wifi.

I bought a new 8" Insignia quad core from Best Buy first, then got the secondhand 10.1" for my parents. But I kind of wish I didn't spend all that $80 on the new 8" now, lol. The 10" is heavy to hold for long times, though. A case like ebay 251679210384 would be good choice for it. The screen is long and narrow, but I find I adjust to that and it isn't annoying. The volume of the 8" is louder than the top volume of the 10". But you can use a Bluetooth external speaker (they are everywhere this Christmas for under $20.)

Just checking here. You have no WiFi at all? I ask because my printer is cabled, but I have WiFi , and I can print to it from Android.
