Check all the settings, since it's possible that your iPad is set to receive messages when it's asleep. However, you can leave your iPad on if you like; Just turn Airplane Mode on. When you do that, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc., are turned off. When you want to use the iPad again, remember to turn Airplane off.

I've never left wifi on all night to know if this is normal. You could try going into Settings > Do Not Disturb. Then enter the times you don't want any notifications & see if this will allow the iPad to stay off all night.

I thought maybe that was causing the issue, but I experimented without it being plugged in. Same result - iMessages waiting in the morning.
