My daughter will be starting school at FSU in the fall and is wanting to rent an apartment. She will be coming in as a junior and prefers to not live in "party central" but still needs to find a place that has individual leases and roommate matching. We are not that familiar with Tally and need some advise on which would be the better areas to live.

The only place we have seen that she likes at this point is The Preserve. We are looking in the $450 - $550/month price range.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Most students live on or just off a few major streets: W. Call Street, High Road, Ocala Road, Pensacola Street, Jackson Bluff Road, and Tennessee Street west of Ocala. Pretty much all of these areas are along the FSU bus routes, as well as the city bus routes (which students can use for free).

which side of town would these road be considered to be on, ie. north, west, east, south? Is there a certain area that would be considered safer than others?

Those are all on the west side of town. The south and west sides of Tallahassee are supposed to have more crime. FSU itself is partially surrounded by some seedy areas, but you just have to be smart and not do stupid things like walk home alone at 4AM.

The area just east of campus is probably the best/safest, being between downtown and campus.

Also...what kind of classes would she be taking? Most of the liberal arts stuff is on the east/older part of campus, whereas the higher level science stuff is on the west end of campus.

She is a psychology major so will be spending the majority of her time in that building since she is a junior.

OK that USED to be in Longmire - lovely old building on the old/east side of campus - but it's moved since 1987...

Campus isn't very wide from north to south, but it is rather long east to west.

FSU psychology - Google Maps

She's in the NW corner of campus. If she's going to walk, be very choosy about the complex and try not to get too far north or south of campus proper.

There are some decent student complexes off Chapel drive on the west side - in the sense that at least she would be in a student ghetto instead of a ghetto ghetto. Easy walking distance to the psych building.

North of campus has some student areas too, but this area also borders "Frenchtown", which is not a nice area.

FSU is a great place to go to school, but the campus itself is not located in the nicer parts of town that are in the east, north and northeast mainly - areas students often never see or even know exist.

I agree. There are some nice apartments and homes rented by students off Chapel. I've been to a few student homes in the area between Pensacola and Belle Vue that seemed pretty decent, though probably too far to walk. The FSU Tomahawk bus runs through there, though

my daughter loves and is extending at Polo Club on High Road.
She was at Players Club last year and liked that too, but Polo Club is alittle better, within your price range. Not bad and close to school on bus route.
She will be senior this year and finds it pretty good, she is not an all week party animal and finds that it is quieter early week, but clearly most of the kids like to have some fun over weekends, partic in football season

I love your daughters too! Go Noles! No but seriously, I was going to leave a legitimate response but then I noticed this thread has been around for a few months. Anyways, if you haven't found a place yet good luck, most decent places have already been filled. Although.... we do have room available....
