How true that is. Currently a NYC journeyman carpenter has a union scale around $80 an hour

What do carpenter's do anyway?, As I understand union people are required for commercial build outs only not residential, and commercial buildings are concrete and metal framing.

Forms for concrete, metal framing, drywall. The pay and benefits are great but that does not mean that most of the union membership is working everyday.

So Carpenter does not mean wood? thats odd that they would do metal framing, and you would think concrete guys would do their own molds. Not arguing with you its just interesting that that would be considered carpentry.

Yeah, it is. It would be against union rules for a concrete person to touch wood or build a form just as it would be against the rules for an electrician to operate an elevator on a construction site.

My Best Friend is a form carpenter. He came here from Washington DC area. No unions here. He made abut 8 bills a hr finally getting to 12.00 Benefits were typical Florida swamp water, no good. He worked for contractors who built government water treatment plants, such as at the port or the Dunedin RO plant. Top money he made before that was enough was about 26 K a yr, like I said lacking any real benes. Its cold in NY but that heat and sun and humidity day in and day out is no picnic here. My Buddy moved to Las Vegas, yeah it was hotter but they worked at night . He was union and first yr after suffering here on 24 -26 K a yr working hard he cleared near 100 K, the second yr 123 but man he worked a lot of hours in that heat. Market crashed all the resorts stopped building, resorts casinos are busting the unions finally. My friend bought a new nice home, boat and truck and has a child. Here he would be working 60 or 85 hrs wondering how to pay for a doctor visit or a new tire for his old pickup living in a 1960's duplex. My best friend misses Florida but hes not stupid, there are no jobs coming this way with realistic liveable wages in blue collar vocations.
Anyway jobs are coming back to Vegas. Wages and benes are better than here if you can take the desert. Cost of living isn't much different and winters don't suck like NY.
You'll make nothing here forget about a union gig no matter what craft from welder, carpenter, or electrician unless you start up your own business. The thing is the wages are worse now than in 1997 its incredible.

Actually, you would never have an electrician operating an elevator on a construction site with organized labor. It would be an Operating Engineer. Totally different union.
