Did anyone see the recent "House Hunters" (2011 new episode) with the family looking for a home in Tampa Bay? They were experiencing sticker shock with the home prices. They could afford $500K but they thought they'd get a lot for for their money in Florida. The real estate agent said a lot of people make the mistake of thinking that...

They wound up with a fixer for $450K on Davis Islands. Wow! Here I was thinking I could get a new build in the Tampa Bay (w/out an ocean view) for under $200K! I'm guessing the pricing is location, location, location!

I've heard that a lot school district budgets are tied to property taxes. I'm wondering if that equates to poor quality schools in areas with more affordable housing?

The house they bought was in Beach Park not Davis Island. Both are located in the South Tampa area which is more expensive than rural areas.

This is the case EVERYWHERE, and always has been. What is different now?

Schools have always sucked in poor communities. That's not a recent phenomenon.

They bought in one of the most expensive areas in the metro area... and they had sticker shock? LoL...

Ya, I was shocked at the overall condition and look of the house they bought for $450K. It was a big house but not updated in about 30 yrs!

I hate when people want you to sign up and all those things before even you could see around. Bad advertisement, if you ask me.

Didn't get the patience to look more after all those harassing pop ups. I wonder who would stand that s**t up!

real estate agents want your point of contact info so they can bother you.....just from the looks of the exterior (curb appeal) it looks like $500k will get you a lot for your money......not sure what the house hunter stuff was all about.
