Publix is almost exactly one mile from the Beneficial/Knights Run intersection on Harbour Island, making it a two mile roundtrip. Some locations on the island may be closer, but addresses behind a security gate may be up to a three mile roundtrip.

The original question was whether shopping for a family is accessible without a car. Unless they enjoy a daily two-mile walk to get that day's amount of food, it's a bit of a hike.

The idea of "walkability" in Florida is the most part a fantasy. Unless you literally live across the street from a grocery store, it isnt happening.

Walking Harbor Island or Davis Island or even Downtown to Publix? Please...

Retail shopping the same thing, it just isnt happening. We have cars here for a reason, and this isnt Manhattan.

I work on Harbour Island and have several co-workers who live there and they can't say enough about how great the island is. Publix is right there on bayshore, you can walk there if you want to get some exercise, and I've seen several people do it. I heard they were putting the grocery store in channelside now that it has been bought? Anyone heard anything new about it?

Walking across the Platt St Bridge isnt exactly a safe thing to do. Especially right now with the construction.

A two mile return trip? What's the big deal? I am 60, nearest grocery store is 1.5 miles away (3 mile return trip), and I NEVER take a car. Sure, I'm there 2-3 times a week, but what's the big deal.

BTW, I drive by it daily because I need vehicle for work, but chose to walk to get some exercise.
