We are strongly considering a move to Tampa and will be down there next week to visit. We are interested in the South Tampa area and I could use some help. Can you recommend any specific areas which we should drive around? Even specific streets, areas with shops, etc......Definitely want areas which we could walk or ride bikes to shops/restaurants, etc. We have 2 school aged children so schools are important

Other questions:
Is Beach Park walkable to things to do? What neighborhoods are?
St. Pete? Seems like a great area but public schools are not rated that well?? Am I right?

Thanks!

Beach park is nice but not walk-able to much. If you want stuff within walking distance (also depending on budget) id suggest something around the howard/swann/macdil/morrison area. You could also go a little further south around the area just north of bay to bay around macdill which would put you in the plant school district (very good as far as I know)

Thanks. Would this be in the Hyde Park/Palma Ceia areas? Would Davis Islands be close to these areas as well? We would like to be in an area that is residential with families and not the 20-something party crowd.

Hyde Park is pretty nice and has an older crowd but still restaurants and bars to go to, it just doesn't attract the party crowd like SOHO (Howard south of Dale Mabry). Unless you're talking about waterfront, I'd rather live in south tampa than on Davis Island. More things are in walking/biking distance than you'll find in the limited selection in the main Davis Island strip mall area; plus easier access to the major streets to get to the interstate, or the crosstown. Also, special events, such as Gasparilla, can make getting to and from the island difficult at times. On the plus side, there's a hospital a minute or two away that you can always get to even if the bridge is closed for some reason. :-)

Hapman, sounds like we are in a similar situation. We're moving to Tampa soon and looking for the same as you in South Tampa (also have two kids, but probably younger) and we are visiting in May. Would love to hear what you think after your visit, maybe we can compare notes. We've been looking at houses in the area and have contacted a realtor too.

Beach Park is walkable to the new Trader Joe's, open on March 21!
The distance from the entrance to Beach Park on Lois Ave to the Trader Joe's store is less than 1 mile.

Walking to Trader Joe's may be mandatory anyway given the miniscule parking lot they have:

Parking at South Tampa Trader Joe?s will be an issue for neighboring retail, office - Tampa Bay Business Journal

I live in Palma Ceia I could walk to bayshore, some shoppes in mcdill, including 3 of my favorite places to eat, but the reality of it is at 100 degrees and humid, you can barely walk to your driveway, plus you are likely to get caught in a torrential downpour, maybe 3 months out of the year is nice enough to walk somewhere.

Thanks for the responses! Trader Joe's is a good enough reason to live in Beach Park ROBLU, are you happy with your realtor? I would love to compare notes. We are looking within the Gorrie, Mitchell, Roosevelt school areas. We have lived in Florida previously, but not Tampa, and this time around are looking for something besides the new build, "Florida-style" neighborhood.

im not a fan of davis island at all unless you have the money to live on the water (and are into boating and such) or have a plane that you keep at the air strip there.

I feel that davis island is not safe due to storms, if a big one comes you have 1 road in and 1 road out. Its not uncommon for one of the bridges to close due to flooding which leaves one LANE in and one LANE out. Im not a fan of that personally. Also, there is very little as far as shops go there (and nothing for groceries although there is a publix close to the bridge to get on the island.) Now, the area on the other side of the davis island bridge is quite nice. A lot of older homes that are well taken care of and full of "charm" although one must consider the maintenance costs of living in a 100 year old home also.

I feel the same way about harbor island but dislike it even more
