Hello,
My family is planning a move to the area somewhere between Clearwater and St. Pete, more than likely, in a few months. My husband's new job is in the final stages, but will more than likely be in the North St. Pete area. My 3-year old son has chronic health issues and will be treating at All Children's. Hence our desire to live somewhere from Clearwater to St. Pete. We plan to rent for a year so that we can take more time to find him the perfect private school. Can anyone suggest areas for us to look into rentals? Budget would like to be less than $1500/month.

One of my major concerns is the crime rates. I know it is going to take adjusting coming from Minnesota and relatively low crime rates, but when I research Pinellas Park and Largo, the rates are rather high. Are they really that unsafe?

We are coming for a visit in a few weeks. Any places we should check out as "locals"?

Thank you all so much!

Best,
Amy

Lived in St. Pete over 30 years and still do. High crime is right. The Tampa Bay Area has very high crime and even the nicer areas are only 5-10 min from some ruff neighborhoods. Just something you live with around here. I personally would avoid and address in St. Pete that ends in "south". There are a few places in the south side that are ok but you will see mostly higher crime neighborhoods on the south side. As far as safe, nicer neighborhoods in St. Pete, far north on 4th Street and 9th street. Shore Achers is nice too but costly. If you love the beach and hot weather, you will love it here. If you hate high crime, traffic and no 4 seasons, it's gonna be rough.

Avoid Pinellas Park and Gulfport too
Nice areas just outside St.Pete are Seminole, Indian Rocks and Palm Harbor

Hope this helps. Just my opinion

I'm sorry I hate when people over exaggerate the crime rate in the area which in my opinion the media makes it seem like its horrible. No the crime rate is not super low but most incidents are isolated in the St. Pete area as well the Clearwater which is relatively safe. Have a good move down here an good luck to adjusting to the weather.
