My friend from Detroit officially became a snowbird. Paid cash for a 1,700 sq ft house in mew port richy, paid $95,000. He is only 60 yrs old retired from GM. Will keep home in Michigan. So he paid his taxes to live here. And he will spend money here during the winter months. Would not of been possible if he did not make a good living working for GM and being a UAW member. And now he is helping Florida and Michigan economy by paying taxes on his 2 homes.

Sure he is paying taxes here. Real Estate taxes. When he spends a dollar he spends 7 cents in sales tax.

It IS just as possible to do even if u dont work for GM or belong to UAW or any other union.

There are at least 1 million snowbirds in this state. One guy I knew when I lived in Orlando worked for Duane/Reade drugstore. He was a stocker. He owned a house here and one in Queens NY. He retired after 40 years with Duane/Reade.

True you don't have to belong to a union or work for GM to have 2 houses. But it sure helps when your house in Michigan is worth over $350,000 and still be able to pay $95,000 cash for his second home here. Union wages for driving semi and line worker not to bad. Now if he wanted to earn some extra money on the side if he gets board he can drive semi for a local company. He still has his CDL and all of his endorsements. But like you say anyone can have 2 houses.

The minimum wage thing makes sure employers do not employ people for very little wages.
No minimum wage would have some employers hiring at $2.00 an hour.

""Workers" in Florida are stupid; they don't have unions to protect them from the greedy employers who take advantage of them, and so they take whatever they can get. "

Hogwash. According to the federal government, nationally, unions alone lost over 400,000 jobs last year. Florida, on the other hand, increased jobs by 206,000.

Ok what are the wages that were being paid here in Florida compared to northern cities. Me personally I could not of made a living here compared to what I was making in Michigan. I retired here but no way in hell could I keep my standard of living on the wages they pay here. Sorry you come from a anti union state but at least with a union your employer cannot walk all over you like they do here. And with a union like the UAW your medical is second to none. And the week between Xmas and new year you get it off with pay. Do they do that here. Hell no.thy don't . Unions made the middle class and people tend to forget that. Jimmy Hoffa and Walter Ruther did not get the hell beat out of them for nothing.

How are those two things related? You are saying nationwide WE lost 400k union jobs, but Florida gained 200k jobs? Unions are shrinking in general that's more to do with the political climate than job creation. The fact that Florida gained 200k jobs says nothing about wages or working conditions in Florida and the fact that nationally we lost x number is Union jobs says even less.
