My friend is from the Tampa Bay area, and he always talks about how self-centered and self-concerning people there are.
I can only imagine its gonna be a bit difficult. All I could tell you is to really start working hard at trying to be social and stuff. Because my friend always mention how people in Tampa only cared about certain stuff. All of it revolving around themselves, especially the women.

I think there is a club called Events and Adventures...it's a singles club but it centers around activities you choose to attend...not sure what it costs to join...Just curious there are no people where you work that are friendly enough to go different places with?

Meetup.com is good for meeting female friends (I say this as a female). I know there are Meetups that offer everything from beach activities, to kayaking, inline skating and pub crawls.
I have not tried Events and Adventures. I understand it is geared towards dating, but my female friends said they also met more girlfriends through it versus dating opportunities.

I second meetup.com . Great way to make new friends, you should check out all of the different groups in your area.

You cannot possibly be serious about that in bold!
I don't know anyone here except for my kids teachers and doctors, to which I never see in a social setting and have ZERO problem going to the beach by myself!

Clearwater is full of tourists, and "scientologists"...:tape :

My suggestion is that you try to find a Meet Up group that shares some of your interests.

I'm sorry but if you are to shy to go to the beach by yourself, I cant imagine you making any real friends, at least in person, maybe online...

This shyness sounds like a personality trait that could handicap your life in a big way as in most cases you have to go out and take life not wait for it to come to you. You might want to seek out counseling that would boost your level of self confidence, because as it is there could be potential friends all about in your daily life but if you are too shy to say anything or strike up conversations you will remain socially isolated. A life coach may be helpful. What is a Life Coach? - Life Coach Spotter
Or give meetup a try in whatever interests you like .Meetups near Tampa, Florida - Meetup
However i suspect your shyness will hold you back from starting to participate with like minded individuals on any given hobby / sport or interest.
