I'm hoping someone familiar with the park can give me the lowdown. How busy are these tennis courts? Are there evenings when they aren't that busy and I can take a little one out to play? (I ask because the kiddo lacks ball control and I don't want to be constantly having the ball hit into the court of more serious players).

Also it looks like there is a playground at the nearby school--Grady. Is that open to the general public or locked after school hours?

I don't know but the courts at HCC Hillsborough have special courts for kids and clinics as well as softer balls that make it easier to play. I'd look into those courts if you're relatively close to HCC (near Raymond James Stadium). I think they have kids programs as well. Start them off early! They'll love it.

I agree, HCC offers great tennis program for kids. There are few other all over Tampa Bay, but I advise to stay away from Tennis Connection. Very poorly run and organized program with little to no improvements over the board. Program at HCC however is way above them for sure.

As for playground on school grounds, normally no one outside of school is allowed on school territory, and most have school gates closed after school hours.

Thanks. My nephew is just visiting for a few days so I won't be signing him up for a program. I thought that might be the case about the school playgrounds, but then I haven't found many parks in South Tampa so I was hoping for the best!

I don't know if it still exists, but back in the day HCC had "court 5." A single fenced in court that was perfect for slamming against a ball machine. It probably still exists. Appears so from looking at the faded court at about 2 o clock, near the left foul line of the NYYankees spring training site in the map at:

tampatennis.net/facility

It's a hard court and you can rent it for a few bucks.

HCC is a great tennis facility. I know of a few tennis pros (and one multiple slam winner) that passed through there.
