From your linked article....thought that the cell phone would get him busted.

Investigators who searched Donaldson’s cell phone found location data storage known as “significant locations.” The data revealed an address on East Frierson Avenue and indicated three days of recorded times and activities that correspond with when the first three murders happened.

I'm glad he basically turned himself in (almost like he wanted to get caught) because I still don't think they had any idea who it was, no clue.

The 24-year-old worked at McDonald’s and asked his manager to hold his gun while he went to Amscot, a check cashing service. When Trai got back to the restaurant, the police arrested him.
College grad working at McD's, let's hear the excuses begin.

Yes
Had he tossed the weapon in the bay and never committed another heinous act, he very well have gotten away with it. We're pretty fortunate that the breaks went the way of the police on this one.

These people (police, mayor) need to be careful not to taint things w/ their comments and release of documents - I imagine the defense atty will be looking for any reason to get this guy off the hook or reduce his sentence from death to life.

He could have. However, he didn't. He stuck to the same one mile radius.

I am trying to wrap my head on why he choose Seminole Heights and in specific Southeast Seminole Heights. Was it because a lot of people walk the streets or the bus routes are heavy in this area. He is from the Town n Country area. The first victim's Aunt mentioned she knows the family which owns a beauty school. Did he in some way know all the victims?

Appears he had good opportunities in life. Graduated from High school, graduated from a University out of state, parents own a business in Tampa. But I guess you never know whats going on behind closed doors. I can not imagine the grief of the parents and the victims families.
