Last time I was in Memphis, locals recommended this place to me:

It was miles better than anything I've had in Florida for sure, but... I still just don't get the hype. Maybe it's just not for me.
4-Rivers is the best BBQ I recall having in Tampa. However, I’ve had quite a bit better elsewhere.

Unk's isn't a restaurant and is a roadside pitmaster. His BBQ puts the 4Rivers nonsense to shame. What you have with 4Rivers is a well-packaged gimmick that appeals to the typical foodie with decor and hype. Outside of Florida in most bbq knowledgeable states it would have closed long ago.

4 Rivers is oversalted garbage. The lukewarm & overcooked brisket and ribs from any BBQ joint at DFW airport is better 10,000 times than 4 Rivers. Or any BBQ in Tampa.

A 4 Rivers opened in Lakeland a year or so ago, but it doesn't have very good reviews. The best BBQ in this town (Lakeland) is Blue Dog Craft Barbecue, they aren't a stand-alone they have a spot in The Joinery which is a food hall on Lake Mirror downtown. They got their start at the local farmer's market. Always rave reviews.

The Smokin' Rib Shack in Largo used to be pretty good. The kind of place that looked like it would fail all health inspections, but the food was the real deal. Haven't been there in years - sadly looks like it's permanently closed.

That's not true at all. We have a Sonny's near us and we frequently go in and ask for just the protein if that's all we want.

Yes, their smoked wings are what I've ordered a few times from there as well. I agree.
