If I do not get tenure in a district and use someone in district (a different administrator) for a reference, do they have to disclose that tenure wasn't obtained if they are asked?

A lot of applications ask if you were ever denied tenure. It would not be a good idea to lie about that on the application, if they do. Not that is really matters, unfortunately any competent administrator knows when your tenure “do or die” time frame is in your state, and can easily find it outside your state. If you are applying to a new school within your same district it will be part of your personnel record and, frankly, Central Office will actively discourage your transfer by an in-district school, since that would grant you tenure and they’ll be stuck with you unless you decide to leave, unless there are some extenuating circumstances and your principal has a really bad reputation.

Given that..... if your state does not have tenure rights transfer, meaning the tenure clock resets any time you change districts, it will be easier to get hired by a new district. In a lot of states with tenure transfers it is easier to get a new job once the eligibility stops. The bottom line is they are going to want some time to see if they want to tenure you themselves.

Not getting tenure isn’t always the career kiss of death. A lot will depend on what your certification is in, for instance a special education teacher will have much better luck than a social studies teacher, and whether your area is experiencing a teacher glut or a teacher shortage. I have known a couple of teachers who were denied tenure by multiple districts and basically ended up getting enough years to retire by accumulating enough 2-4 year stints, including repeats in a district or two after a big enough bridge in time. I knew one lady that got hired about every other year, whenever the school was desperate for a “qualified” warm body, but they never renewed her at the end of the year or rehired her if doing so that year would qualify her for tenure. She was a nice lady but a truly mediocre teacher who had less than stellar classroom management skills. She also was stuck only subbing during teacher gluts.

But, yeah, they’ll ask and she/he should not lie. Your best bet is if that other administrator will have a reasonable explanation as to why your not receiving tenure was not because you were an unacceptable teacher. Good luck.
