I'm really enjoying being semi-retired after completing the coding academy. I got a part-time job working on websites that I really enjoy. Unfortunately, it's a slow time and I'm not getting the hours that I need to achieve this year's goals. I've been getting LinkedIn notices about online tutoring jobs where you essentially get to set your hours (or so they claim).

Does anyone here have any experience being an online tutor? What about the companies that offer in-home tutoring? Are there any companies that have a proven track record or that I should avoid?

I have dismantled my home classroom, but I don't think a full set-up would be necessary for tutoring. I considered my online instruction to be adequate during the pandemic, so I have a lot of learning resources to start with.

I've also been contacted about private tutoring. I charged $25/hour 25 years ago, and I've read that the going rate is between $35 and $70/hour, depending on level and location.

Thanks in advance for any pointers. I keep having teaching dreams (not nightmares), so deep down I really miss the joys of teaching. Tutoring seems like it might scratch that itch.

I worked for Sure Prep Learning as a Math(s) Tutor. We were assigned to schools and did "pull outs.". 18 per hour, ten years ago. The big money is in companies like Varsity Tutors. They called me and basically said I was not the young, ivy leaguer with perfect SATs, that they were looking for...I appreciated the call back, though. A very exclusive neighborhood kind of thing, I suppose.

Online tutoring is extremely saturated, and you could get a top teacher of Spanish for five bucks an hour.
There also was a big shakeup in China, with language teachers, etc., that might explain the situation. I actually applied to VIPKid while living in Thailand.....absolute nonsense. I was marked down for having white walls in my condo. Make them pay first.

School bus drivers start at 24 in FCPS....and you are being paid for every minute....you could probably give 20 minute lessons to good looking taiwanese ladies, while your coworkers are smoking cigarettes. They would love the yellow bus backdrop.
