In an email today, my teacher's union president said that elementary teachers who hold multiple subject credentials may need to go back to college to get a supplemental credential to teach PE or a single subject credential just to be more marketable and to keep a teaching job at my southern CA school district. As the enrollment is decreasing, and the number of needed teachers are reducing, many multiple subject credential holders in CA are finding themselves out of a job, and having a hard time finding work in other school districts, since the demand apparently is moving toward a greater need for middle and high school teachers.

How does certification work? Here you get certified as an Elementary Teacher OR you get a subject area certification (Math, Science, etc). There are a few areas such as music, art and PE that are K-12 certifications but most subject areas are secondary certifications and Elementary is separate.

here in AZ i know a lot of teachers who've made the move from elementary to middle school and all they had to do was pass the highly qualified exam for their subject ....... i know this for language arts, math and science

not sure what's in place for other subjects

The cynic in me wonders if the OP's union president has a cozy deal with a university or professional development provider - build a sense of need in the ranks, then come along a little while later with a special 'deal' for the members from so-and-so college or certificate mill. Terrible I have to think that way, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Here where I live you have to take one course and then past the California Single subject examination test (CSET) in whatever subject you want your single subject credential.

in california, our education system is a mess. you cannot just pass a test. you need to pass a test as well as take other classes and then while you are teaching, have to "clear" your credential.

Here we do the same except in the sciences where there is a general science cert that allows the holder to teach all sciences in grades 6-12 which, unfortunately, has made my single subject certs in physics and chmistry all but worthless.

My guess is the OP's state will end up allowing those with general certs to keep teaching. Otherwise they'll face a teacher shortage.

I am so sick of all of this credentialing bull----. It is just so corrupt and insincere. And it is constantly changing to suit the needs of everyone but educators and students. It really is all about the benjamins.
The one thing I love about this country is that you really can take your business elsewhere. I really do hope that the public schools face a teacher shortage and that, the next time around, educators will not be seduced by higher pay to teach under horrible conditions and to empower this sort of behavior among leaders. I really think that the public school system is in dire need of a thumping wake-up call.
My suggestion to the OP is to change careers or seek employment at a private school (if possible) rather than to put up with this sort of nonsense, as it will be a continuing occurrence.
