To be fair, only 12 school districts/11 counties were represented here. This is just the cream of the crop...not that there aren't good schools elsewhere in the state. 11 counties represented means that 84 were not. 88% of Tennessee counties didn't make the list.

Of the 16 schools:
5 are in Nashville metro (including the top 4; top 2 in Davidson)
3 are in the Tri Cities CMA (2 Johnson City, 1 Kingsport)
3 are in Knoxville metro (2 in Knox, 1 in Anderson)
2 are in Memphis metro (both Shelby Co.)
1 is in Chattanooga metro
1 is in Morristown (Knoxville CMA)
1 is in Greeneville

Middle College is a very different school. It only has about 150 students in grades 10-12, and they are students who did not thrive in a traditional high school environment.

It is not for those with behavior problems, but rather kids who may have dropped out or not gone on to college. Some might have been considered outcasts at their old schools, and some just are hard to motivate. Some may be on the edge of behavior issues, and problem-solving is a big part of life there. They must be interviewed to get in, and are allowed to dual-enroll in community college courses or at local vocational/design colleges. They also get a lot individual attention there.

IMHO, Middle College succeeded because of the principal, Harold Ford. He has retired, but the new principal, Brian Bass, will be outstanding as well.

We have a friend whose daughter will be a senior next year. They have enjoyed their experience.
