Hello folks, my wife and I have been natives of northern ca our whole lives and are ready for a new adventure. Among a few choices we have looked at Tennessee is one of our choices, and I have many questions that i hope some of you can answer. We live in a typical ca track home where our houses are so close together, i don't want to mention what i have seen my neighbor doing So homes with a little more land in woodsy areas. A part of town where my young boys can play and go to a good school as well. But here is the catch. We both work in health care she is a acute care nurse and I am a cardiovascular specialist. This means i need to be within a 30 commute to the hospital to respond to emergencies. So where would this perfect place be for my family? Oh and if anyone is in healthcare and can give me an idea about salaries that would be great

I'm not sure if I can provide you with a "perfect place"...that's up to you to decide...but I can tell you that any of Tennessee's major cities (and some of the smaller ones) would be able to provide you with a home with a much larger lot than you have now, possibly woodsy (a lot of areas in the state can offer that) within 30 minutes of a hospital.
My question would be...tell us about your family! What are your likes/dislikes? What do you want in a city or town? What would be "must haves" for a place you want to live? What sort of hospital do you want to work for? For profit? Not for profit? University? Regional?
I can't give you a good idea on salaries...but I would say it would be a good idea to look into job openings and opportunities before you back up and leave! Tennessee wasn't crippled by the economic slowdown, but there is still relatively high unemployment in some areas. It would probably be a good idea to either have a job lined up or at least have some interviews before moving here.

I agree with Nashvols on needing more information. Tennessee is divided into three regions and each one has its own unique flavor. If you have time, plan a trip here and tour the state on I-40. You will get a good idea of what each region has to offer.

You should consider surburbs of Nashville. Nashville is rapidly growing as the hub for healthcare.Other options :

Laura C asked why you are leaving California. I also plan to leave California as soon as I can retire and I'm sure that you and I want to leave California for many of the same reasons. They include a very high overall cost of living, high taxes, high vehicle registration fees, bumper to bumper traffic during rush hour, overpopulation, uncontrolled flow of illegal aliens into the state costing taxpayers billions of dollars each year, gang violence.......I could go on and on.... I'm originally from the south anyway and want to return to the south when I retire.
My wife and I have decided to retire in a large development in Monterey, Tennessee, between the cities of Cookeville and Crossville. It is a beautiful area with wonderful friendly people. Both Cookeville and Crossville have hospitals, so finding jobs in the area might be possible. The city of Cookeville has a population of around 30,000 people and provides all of the goods and services you will ever need. Cookeville Regional Medical Center is also larger than the hospital in Crossville. Cookeville is about a one hour drive from Nashville, so you would not be very far from a major airport. You might want to consider checking out this area. Good luck and best wishes.

I am also from CA, looking to move to Knoxville. I was born & raised here, moved away & made the big mistake of coming back because of family. This was a wonderful place to live many years ago. It's really sad to see what it has become! I agree totally with all the things you said that are bad about this state. I was thinking about moving to Oregon, much closed move, but it can't compare to TN. Can't wait to get out of here! My cousin moved to Nashville from Huntington Beach, CA and have not regretted it one single day! They love TN. Good luck to all that are relocating from CA to TN!
