I drove up to Erie, PA and on to Buffalo and Niagra Falls last year, and I actually drove both routes. We went up through WV, and Pittsburgh to Erie, and returned via the route through Ohio and Kentucky.

I would say that the ride through VA, WV, and Pittsburgh is definitely more scenic, but the route through Ohio and Kentucky is faster and a much easier drive. So it really all depends on what you want. If you are in a hurry and simply want to get there quickly, I would go through Kentucky and Ohio, but if you want to stop and enjoy the mountain scenery on the way, I would choose the WV and Pittsburgh route.

Anyway, I really enjoyed my trip to that area. I thought Erie was a nice town with an interesting downtown and beautiful lakefront area. Also, the people in the area seemed really nice as well. I think the rustbelt region of the north and midwest and the Appalachian region of the south actually share quite a bit in common as far as work ethics and values go.
