I'm looking for a nice less touristy place to rent a cabin in the mountains of Tenn. I'm looking for natural streams, mountains, bicycle and walking trails, caves, and fishing within walking/biking distance or at least a pretty short car trip away.

I'm looking for a place that is not ruined by "touristy" things. It can be rural as all get out, I don't care.

To get some idea of what I'd like, Petit Jean State Park – Petit Jean Mountain – Arkansas State Park in Arkansas is very nice -- but I wouldn't mind seeing something different in Tennessee.

Thanks!

First, given what you're looking for, you want to stay out of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. There are loads of cabins for rent around Gatlinburg, there are also plenty of cars and tourists.

You might want to check around Townsend. It's still close to the park but hasn't developed the same level of tourist interest. It's been some time since I've been so I can't suggest any other areas. Others who live in East Tennessee will reply and give you better information than I can.

I would suggest Roan mountain or the Pisgua (sp?) national forest over in North East Tn, might fit your needs to a T.
This site could really help you out, has information about a lot of the state parks in TN and cabin rentals within them.
TN State Parks: Roan Mountain State Park

You really can't go too far wrong as long as the cabin you rent is clean and nice, is reasonably close to the park, and you stay away from the Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg corridor. Some people really enjoy Gatlinburg and all the touristy type things, others don't (including me). The mountains themselves are beautiful; truly one of the greatest natural places in the entire country.

You might want to think about Fall Creek Falls State Park. Tennessee State Parks: Fall Creek Falls

The Smokies Park is amazing but very touristy. NETN (Tri-Cities, Mountain City) are just as nice and so are areas around Chattanooga.

What about staying somewhere around the Cherohala skyway? Tellico Plains, Mountain City,

Damascus, VA is also very beautiful and not touristy, whatsoever.

Intereting suggestion but pretty far drive. If I fly somewhere, its going to be somewhere super interesting.

I'm not sure you need another suggestion, but another, closer option for you would be the Natchez Trace Parkway (run by the National Park Service). It starts in Natchez, Mississippi and ends near Nashville. I haven't been down the Mississippi part, but the drive through Tennessee is gorgeous, especially in the spring or fall.

There are no cabins to rent, but there are campgrounds. I'm not a fan of driving an RV myself, but the Trace is one place I might consider it. Renting an RV would probably cost you about the same as renting a cabin.
