I'd say Denton is pushing the edges of being a small town, with about 130K population. It is also not far from two much larger cities, in a metropolitan area of 6.3+ million. To me, a 'small town' is something much smaller. I left because it was getting too big!

I don't really know enough about Denton to comment on that, but I hope you find what you're looking for in Philly. Good luck.

Gee, I just *have* to offer my 0.0000002 cents worth.

My stepdaughter, who is a teacher with an M.E. degree, moved across country to Austin. One reason was that she hated to see most of her peers doing what the OP described: in sum, being in a rut, going nowhere fast.

If you have the chance to try something new, do it. You can move back to Denton later, but you probably won't want to. The old saying is true: "You can't go home again." The reason is that, once you leave home, you change.

I too left a small city. The old friends I knew have mostly stayed in their same ruts. I'm sure glad I left. I wish now that I'd taken more advantage of opportunities to move.

Some thoughts:
- Change is inevitable; growth is optional.
- You can be young once; you can be immature forever.
- Whether you think you can, or think you cannot, you're right.
- When you've made your last climb, you're old- whether 25 or 85.
- Man's mind, once stretched by new ideas, never regains its original dimensions.

Good luck!

You were leaving in 2011, when you were 26. It's 2015 now. What happened to the Philly move in 2011?

This thread began in 2011--don't know if the OP went to Philly and then back to Denton before wanting to move again or if what is more likely--he was venting the first time and never left...

It is kind of funny the two posts are several years apart. In that length of time I gave birth to twins, moved 1500 miles and lived on unemployment for a year, moved to Fort Worth for a position, went back to an old company working from home, started doing same job for AT&T and moved back to the town I initially lived in here, and am planning to move to the Plano area (not sure exactly) this summer.

OP, I hope you have taken the leap to and moved in the direction of the life you want

Funny. I moved from Philly to McKinney with no intention of going back other than to visit.

I drove through there expecting a Lawrence, Kansas. Oh gawd how I was disappointed. Most depressing college town I've ever seen besides probably Arlington. That said, the people I've met who go to UNT have been very chill, friendly people.
