Hi,

I am currently living in SLC, UT and currently working as a medical assistant for the University of Utah Orthopeadic center. I am very interested in moving to Dallas. I want to go to nursing school. the wait list here is awful and I have to become a CNA just to apply! To my understanding schools in Dallas do not require CNA. So how are the colleges and anyone recomend a good one that's not high in tuition? How are the health care jobs? Are they very competitive and hard to find? Is the health care system growing for MA's and nurses? Also where do you recommend to live? How are the people?

Thanks, bugsyboo!

TWU has a great nursing school that's not too expensive if you get Texas residency, and they accept pre-reqs from CCs. Very competitive, though. The problem is that DFW has several ADN and BSN programs so there is no real need for nurses here.

DFW is huge so I'd recommend to live close to your office/college.

DFWGal is correct that there is really not a nursing shortage here.

Opportunities for MAs in Texas are extremely limited. Basically, they can only work at doctors' offices/clinics. Competition for those jobs is fierce.

Univ of TX at Arlington has an excellent BSN program. Both Tarrant and Dallas County community colleges have good ADN programs. It is very tough to get a slot in any of the programs, but if you have MA experience, that will give you an edge.

TCU also has a good BSN program, but it is extremely expensive.
