I'm moving from FL to TX (finally! yippee!). In searching for my new place property taxes will be a major consideration as I am single with one income. I've been trying to locate a site that lists property tax areas from lowest to highest so I may narrow my search for a property. I'm looking for 10+ acres with at least a 3/2 house (NOT MH!), 3+ stall horse barn and decent fencing close to at least one hospital for work. I've found several places I like, but the property taxes were prohibitive even with an ag-exemption. Can anyone help me find information of a lowest to highest property tax list? I seem to be wasting alot of time looking at places for sale only to find out the places I like have prohibitive property taxes...... Thank you ever so much! I am SO looking forward to my new Texas address! KF

Best bet would be to look at the valuation on the property. Property taxes are high all over the state, but the valuation of the property will be the biggest driver in the amount of taxes you pay.

Just my semi-informed $0.02...

As far as I am aware there is no such accurate list maintained. However the Texas Comptroller Of Public Accounts maintains the property taxation system here in Texas. Almost everything you want to know about property taxes here can be found on this WEB site, or the links from it Property Tax Assistance . This includes the explanations of all those codes on the tax role data you see, how they determine what taxing categories are used for a property, along with a whole plethora of information which only requires some reading and searching to find. They might even have what you are looking for or if you email them they might be able to provide a basic spreadsheet of the information.

What you can do is create your own spreadsheet of the tax rates for the various counties. On that WEB site is a link to the information of all the taxing entities. If you have a general area in mind you can go to each of their tax sites and they will provide the taxing rates for each category of tax levied. It is easy then just to sort the spreadsheet in any way you choose.

Beware that some of the most rural counties in Texas have some of the highest tax rates because they have no tax base. You can easily find individual county tax rates online but it's the municipal or local rates that can significantly add to the county rate. Local rates are difficult to find without calling the locality that you plan to move to. Also be aware that at least a (couple?) of Texas counties assess a fairly stiff annual county property tax on privately owned automobiles on top of their real estate taxes. These counties that do this seem to closely guard this information from disclosure but Bailey County, near Clovis, New Mexico, is one does have this property tax on newer POVs.

Also be aware that Texas property taxes can vary greatly across counties and even across taxing districts. I always recommend anyone moving to Texas for the first time to: (1) first find your property, (2) then ask for the tax appraisal on that property and (3) then ask for the annual property taxes on that specific property. If asked, a realtor may only quote you a county rate that disregards the municipal add-ons that can easily double your taxes.

Best of luck and welcome to Texas
