I am a disabled married man now in La Paz Mexico but moving back to the US. I have decided on Texas, but where? I need a place that I can buy a home for less than $80K, that is lower in humidity and doesn't scorch me all summer long, but doesn't freeze in winter either. My wife wants a smaller city with a Walmart or decent shopping. Any Texas folks around who can make a recommendation? I realize I can't always get my ideals, but can I come close?

How small is "smaller city," mexicoman? I'm disabled and moved to Abilene almost a year ago. Abilene has about 115,000 people. The cost of living here is low (you can definitely buy a home for about $80,000 here in a middle-class neighborhood) and they freeze the property tax rate for disabled folks. (I giggled with joy when I got my property tax bill last month!)

I've been very pleased with Disability Services here and the medical care is very good, too. If Walmart is your thing, there are two Supercenters but we have a ton of stores and restaurants, local and chain.

It's going to be hot anywhere in Texas in the summer. But if you want low humidity, and small town, try Uvalde, not very far from SA.

Texas does have air conditioning for homes, autos and places we go. We're working on that state wide air dome but are waiting to test the sliding cover on the Cowboys new stadium first.
