Fairly concise overview of the current state renewable energy:
Renewable Energy Is About To Boom - Business Insider

Quote:
Wind has transitioned from an expensive green energy propped up by legislative support to a bona fide player that competes shoulder-to-shoulder with gas and coal for large generation projects. Look no further than the heart of oil and gas country, Texas. Some 25 percent of all U.S. wind power contracts this year were in the Lone Star State, and many of those produced electricity at just $25 per megawatt-hour, a $10 discount to prevailing wholesale Texas power prices

If you have solar panels at home can you "sell" it to the energy companies?

Yep. However one individual with a 3500-4000 SF home spent $60K converting his home to 100% solar. Very poor return on investment. Same with individual windmills. About a 50% return on investment.

With high winds, hail storms, etc lots of infrastructure damage. A lot of windmills are shut down due to high winds.
