My son has been assigned an 8 week internship at a hospital in Brownsville for the coming fall term - he is worried about being so close to the Mexico border.

He will have his own car, he needs to sort out housing etc. Any major concerns, things/situations/places to avoid etc?

Things to do, things to see?

Search the forums for RGV. There's not much that can be added to what has already been discussed.

Rio Grande Valley. Just search for "RGV" or Brownsville and that should do the trick.

He is worried about being close to the Mexico border? Tell him to quit watching the news and take a look down there. I guarantee you that he will be surprised when he gets down there. Its really not bad.

Great advice! From high school on all he has heard is Don't Go to Mexico - His University sent out Spring Break notices every year advising the students against visiting Mexico. Therefore of course there is that fear in the back of his mind. One of the main reasons I am reaching out on these threads, asking what to do where to do it etc.

The RGV is probably one of the safest metro areas in the country. As for things to do, south padre island isn't too far.
