I hope I spelled that correctly. In 1958 I was stationed at Camp Gary Army Air Field near San Marcus. At the edge of town was a tourist attraction named (I think) Aquarena which was a huge spring and they had beautiful ladies performing "fancy" underwater swimming we could watch through a glass wall. In a nearby town (I don't remember the name) there was a large commercial business that smoked meat which was the best I have ever eaten before or since. Tonight I'm remembering "the good old days" and would appreciate it if anyone could update me on what has happened to those places. Thanks.

You are talking about San Marcos which is now a college town between Austin and San Antonio. The area has grown tremendously since the 1950s. Camp Gary was decomissioned in the early 1960s and became a Jobs Corps center and is now used for technical training.

Aquarena is still there. It's part of Texas State University now. They have glass bottomed boats and scuba divers. Here's the link

The town of Lockhart is a short distance SE of San Marcos and has long been noted for its various "meat market" style BBQ restaurants.

BBQ CAPITAL OF TEXAS - LOCKHART

Very much agree...the BBQ found in Lockhart (along with Luling City Market in Luling) are worth a drive for me at least once a month.

OP....if the Lockhart BBQ is not what you remembered (but you'll be glad you visited ).....then possibly the "smoked meat" place was in New Braunfels. Before Gruene, Schlitterbahn, Wurstfest & other things....NB was known for having good "smokehouses"....NB Smokehouse still exists, but i don't find it "all that". I prefer the dozens of BBQ joints found in central texas over it.

(& the spelling is San Marcos)

That's it, New Braunfels! Thanks to all for the up-dates. That's when I was young and indestructible, so long ago.

I would also add that the hill in Sewell Park by the river is a veritable "meat market" on sunny days

The best BBQ in the area is at City Market in Luling, which is about a 15-20 min drive from San Marcos
