You are the first person in a long time I have heard argue that legalization might cripple the cartels. The cartels are very diversified. They still have many other drugs to smuggle, black mail, kidnapping, robbery and human trafficking.

Why do those industries exist and thrive here? Because our legislators are getting money from them.
I never understood why republicans would support private prisons. Private businesses exist to make money. Its in there best interest to support laws that support the commodity the deal in, prisoners. Since republicans do not trust government, why would they trust government not to act in the best interest of companies who should not have the best interest of their constitutes at heart. Since there is no way to remove government from law enforcement, punishment and rehabilitation all private prisons do is create another special interest group whose soul purpose is to earn as much of the tax payers money as possible.
