Long story short.. Boyfriend was offered a job position and we are making a move from NJ. I have to figure out what city I want to live in but I know NOTHING about Texas.

He mentioned:

Alamo, Donna, Edinburg, McAllen, Mission, Pharr, San Juan and Weslaco.

Can anyone please give me some background on them?

Looking for somewhere with great schools, lower crime rates, family oriented, shopping centers...

What food stores are there?

We have an almost 4 year old son so school is important!!

If it makes any difference My Son and I only speak English.

And also information on guns? Are they really everywhere??

Ironic that the Rio Grande Valley, with a population well in excess of a million, does not have its own page on this forum!

The area is largely Latino with a good helping of snowbirds - so I'm sure there are those that can help you with finding a neighborhood that would be an easier transition. There have been some discussions on here before so maybe search a little bit too. I am thinking McAllen or the Sharyland school district of Mission might be the first places to look, but I don't know a whole lot. Good luck! I mean "BUENA SUERTE!"

If you search the TEXAS forum using the key word McAllen - you will find a lot of threads, some of which might be pretty helpful !

Yes indeed! Lots of good info.

Also search for RGV, or Rio Grande Valley.

So far it looks like McAllen is the place to go until the house is ready in San Juan. I am a nervous wreck!
