Do you advise to visit Amarillo for the keen on horses I am ?

I ask you because I have to choose my itinerary around Texas and I hesitate due to the long way from Houston and the choice I have to make between the North and the South (SPI)...

Pls help

I'm also extremely keen on horses (we live where we do because of that, in fact - my husband figured out it was cheaper to buy me a house and 55 acres in the country than to live in Austin and board, at the rate I was going, long about the 3rd foal), I live here, and I wouldn't drive to Amarillo just for that. Now, granted, my horses are Morgans, not QH's, but I'm close friends with quite a few QH's anyway. Especially not given the limited amount of time you'll have to experience as much of Texas as you want to. Trust me, you can get plenty of exposure to horses here in Texas without driving that far.

OK TexasHorselady, I understand what you mean.
You know, when I bought Black Leopan, my lovely QH (I felt in love with this breed in 2005 after a stay in a ranch in Arizona) my husband told me that he thought that I didn't love my horse.
I was so surprised....I asked him what he said that. His answer was because he considered that I put my horse in a jail (a box in a barn). He argued by saying that to his mind, a horse should live outside, closed to his owner's house. I said yes, we can move far away from the city and having our horse in the yard (garden).
One year later, Black Leopan arrived at home in a paddock behind our new home in the country. We bought another horse, to be Black's friends and they both live at home. I am so happy, working all week long and horsebackriding the weekend as a cowboy !
Amarillo means something to me but it's only the name of a city.
What I am looking for in Texas are not cities but a small towns, quiet places, mountains, open ranges, rivers, ranches, real cowboys, Indians, genuine Americans, authentic people !

Go to Hill Country State Natural Area. Take one of the guided trail rides from one of the ranches next to the park. You'll love it.

And congratulations for getting your horse at home and out of a stall! Mine are out 24/7 (they can go in, but it's their choice and they almost always choose out), and they are so much healthier and happier that way.

I would not make the long trip to Amarillo just to see the museum.

We just moved from Amarillo area a couple of years ago.....you won't see any horses in town except at the QH Museum......it's mostly 18 wheeler trucks going thru on the interstate and lots of SUV's....just like any other city. You'd have to go to an actual working ranch like the 6666 Ranch - and then they'd be scattered over a few thousand acres - it's not a tourist place but a business.
