Which is so short sighted and silly in my opinion.

Who cares?
Next threat is going to be “Texas being excluded from the South West”

People probably have a difficult time categorically putting the state in with the rest of “the south” because unlike the other states, it’s much less geographically and culturally homogenous. I lived in the south (Alabama) for a number of years and travelled all over the region. There’s no question at all that the eastern part of TX is traditionally southern. But then you have places like Amarillo and El Paso which aren’t. Because of how large and diverse the state is, most people probably have trouble viewing the whole state as a southern state. And I get that, I kinda view Texas as just Texas, sort of a small region unto itself. I would label it a southern state if I had to pick only one way to categorize it, but it’s really hard to put in any region cleanly because of its size and geographical diversity. Parts of it feel southern, parts kinda midwestern, other parts southwestern, etc.

Let them exclude us- Why would we want to be included in the states, with lowest literacy, poorest health, highest obesity, poorest education and Civil War losers. At least the University of Texas is decent and while not up to Cal-Berkeley or Michigan standards, its not Alabama or Miss.

I just tend to go by whatever the US Census categorizes states as...and according to the Census, Texas is in the South. As are Oklahoma (frequently mistaken for being in the Midwest), Maryland, and Delaware.

I think the fact that it’s only in the south that you see people think differently says a lot about this region. That being some people from some southern states look for any way to get out of the south.

Los Angeles, Phoenix and Seattle are all extremely different culturally, topographically, etc etc etc. Never hear any complains of them being Western states. Maine and Philly same scenario. No complains about being in the northeast.

But in the good ole south the edge states will find any way to separate themselves.

Some words of wisdom from Bikini Bottom:

“Hey Patrick what am I now?”
“Stupid”
“No Im Texas”
“What’s the difference”

There’s a reason Austin takes pride in its attempt to be the one city that’s “not like the rest of Texas”.

They can try all they want, but they are just a smaller version of Houston and Dallas

Exactly. I'm amazed at the opinions of superiority by the Austin citizens when I have visited. I think it's a lot of folks who have moved there from somewhere else and were used to being told that Austin was the best that Texas has to offer. Certainly not reality.

GaTech is a decent school, depending on which rankings it may be anywhere from 30-60 and better than anything in Alabama or Mississippi. Still Texas would be better to align with the west- than the South.
